Adopted in March 2021, The GHG Reduction Action Plan (“The Plan”) was a result of the Town recognizing the Climate Change Emergency and amending the Strategic Plan to include priorities for climate change mitigation and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction. The Plan defines overarching goals for emission reductions and outlines actions to help realize a more sustainable and healthier future for the community.
The GHG Reduction Action Plan is reviewed annually by the Climate and Environment Advisory Committee.
Actions to Reduce Emissions
Mahone Bay’s GHG inventory along with community engagement described in the Plan helps to better inform the Town on actions to effectively reduce overall emissions from corporate and community use. These actions align with an overall strategy for the Town and the utility and will help to exceed a 45% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030 and put the community on track for net zero emissions by 2050
Ellershouse AREA Wind Farm
The Town of Mahone Bay is proud to be a partner in the Alternative Resource Energy Authority (AREA) a municipal partnership that runs the Ellershouse Windfarm, a source of renewable energy that supplies power to the AREA partners, the Towns of Antigonish, Berwick, and Mahone Bay including, Riverport Electric Light Commission. The Town’s partnership in AREA means cleaner energy for Mahone Bay residents and businesses and additional revenue for re-investment in capital projects serving the community.
Electric Vehicle Chargers
Mahone Bay has invested in charging infrastructure for electric vehicles in partnership with AREA and the Pan-Maritime EV Charger Project. Eight new FLO SmartTwo chargers have been installed and are available for public use! These chargers will allow electric vehicle owners to charge up while visiting Mahone Bay. Electric vehicle owners will now also be able to take advantage of Mahone Bay’s green energy, which receives 84% of its energy supply from non-emitting sources. EV Carsharing
The Town is undergoing a feasibility study to understand the conditions under which an EV carsharing program could be successful in Mahone Bay.
Could it work in Mahone Bay?
EV carsharing could give the community:
- More transportation choices
- Greater confidence driving electric vehicles
- Access to a car without the cost of ownership
We are working with a company called movmi to undertake this study.

Thank you for your interest! The Town of Mahone Bay is evaluating a shared electric vehicle (EV) carshare program to support affordable, sustainable regional transportation. Your feedback is vital and highly confidential. This survey will take you less than 5 minutes to complete.
Before you begin: What is carsharing?
Carsharing is a simple idea: instead of everyone owning their own car, a small number of shared cars are parked right in the community for residents to use whenever they need one. You book a car through an app or website, pick it up nearby, drive it for as long as you need, an hour or a few days, and return it. You only pay for the time and distance you actually use.
Everything else is taken care of for you. Insurance, fuel or charging, cleaning, maintenance, and repairs are all handled by the carsharing service. There's no monthly loan payment, no insurance bill, and no upkeep to worry about, just access to a car when you want one.
Carsharing also cuts down on greenhouse gas emissions, giving the community a cleaner, lower-cost option for getting around.
This survey is intended to support the Town of Mahone Bay’s community-wide greenhouse gas inventory by gathering local information on household energy use, home heating sources, transportation habits, waste practices, and wastewater systems. The responses will help improve the accuracy of community emissions estimates by providing local data on topics such as housing type, heating fuel use, vehicle ownership, annual kilometres driven, electricity use, composting, and interest in future energy or climate programs. Information collected through the survey will be used in summary form only to better understand community trends and identify opportunities to reduce emissions across Mahone Bay.
